It’s no secret to Eagles’ fans, and NFL’ fans that the 2018 NFL Draft will be held on Thursday. Earlier this week, I published an article, everything every Eagles’ fan, and NFL’ fan should know about the upcoming draft.
Obviously, as always, there is a great deal of prospects to draft in the 1st round, even at No. 32. Eagles’ potential draft candidates include RB Derrius Guice, RB Ronald Jones II, WR Courtland Sutton, CB Duke Dawson, CB Mike Hughes, RB Sony Michel, and CB Josh Jackson.
Note: The players are arranged in no particular order. Also, I didn’t include a tight end because the Eagles already have Zach Ertz, and solid Richard Rodgers – there is no way they draft a tight end now in the 1st round – maybe in the 4th, 5th, etc.
Derrius Guice – Guice would be a great feature for the Eagles’ offense – between current RB Jay Ajayi’s uncertainty of staying healthy, as well as occupying a bit bigger of a RB than Corey Clement. Last season Guice rushed into the end zone 11 times. As well as rushing for just over 1,200 yards – which is comparable to Leonard Fournette’s college stats. Guice ran a 4.49 40-yard-dash.
Ronald Jones II – Despite the slowness of Jones – telling from his 4.65 40-yard-dash, he is still capable of blasting through opponent’s defenders. Last season in USC, Jones rushed in for a whopping 19 touchdowns – which is comparable to Ezekiel Elliott’s college stats. Jones and Guice would both be a great addition, but because of Guice’s higher draft grade, I’ll have to take him over Jones.
Courtland Sutton – Although the Eagles seem pretty booked at the wide receiver position – between Alshon Jeffery, Nelson Agholor, and Mike Wallace – it never hurts to have some depth, as they had last year with the help of GM Howie Roseman, that made them defending Super Bowl champions. Last college season at SMU, Sutton pulled in an attractive 12 touchdowns, for over 1,000 yards. The year before that, he pulled in over 70 receptions. Sutton ran a 4.54 40-yard-dash. However, as I said, the Eagles are seemingly booked at the wide receiver position, I, personally, don’t think they should take a shot at wide receiver in the 1st round.
Duke Dawson – Although Duke Dawson is a commonly unheard name, he is still capable of being a 1st round selection. Dawson is arguably the best slot cornerback coming out of college this year – which was what Patrick Robinson was as an Eagle last season. Dawson is my person favorite defensive back in the 2018 NFL Draft for many reasons. Last season in college, Dawson had four interceptions, including one pick-six. He also had 34 total tackles. Dawson ran a 4.46 40-yard-dash.
Mike Hughes – Another talented cornerback, nonetheless, he isn’t particularly used for playing in the slot, as Patrick Robinson did. Personally, I think Hughes is a bit over-hyped, and won’t make a huge impact on the Eagles’ 53-man roster. However, last college season while he played for Florida, he had four interceptions, including one pick-six. Hughes ran a 4.53 40-yard-dash.
Sony Michel – Michel is either a late 1st rounder, or a early 2nd rounder. Will he fit on the Eagles’ 53-man roster? According to many Eagles’ fans, and the people that do mock drafts, Michel is no joke when it comes to the Eagles. Last college season, Michel rushed in for a whopping 16 touchdowns, and over 1,200 yards. Michel ran a 4.54 40-yard-dash. Nonetheless, Michel is prone to injures, which the Eagles don’t want, especially from the injuries that they tend to suffer, from which seems like every year.
Josh Jackson – Jackson would also be a great fit for the Eagles’ 53-man roster. Though, because of him not being a slot corner, I wouldn’t prefer him unless he’s prerequisite for the Philadelphia Eagles. Last college season, Jackson intercepted an astonishing eight throws, including a captivating two pick-sixes. Iowa’s corner ran a 4.56 40-yard-dash as his official time.
This brings my two favorite candidates down to Derrius Guice and Duke Dawson. I did not commit approbation of Courtland Sutton because, as I said, Eagles are pretty stacked at the wide receiver position, meaning I don’t think they should take a shot at a wideout in the 1st round. Same factor applies to the Derrius Guice and Duke Dawson ‘debate’ – despite my favoritism and passion for slot cornerback Duke Dawson, he isn’t worth spending on a 1st round pick. We can’t forget that the Eagles have adequate Rasul Douglas and Sidney Jones. So that leave’s us with running back Derrius Guice – again, given the uncertainty of Jay Ajayi remaing healthy, and retaining a talented running back more substantial than Corey Clement, Guice would be a great feature and addition to the Eagles’ running game.
